Very Dated Powder Room Gets A Moody Reveal Featuring Murals Your Way.

The smallest room in the house can make the biggest design impact. You can go bold in powder rooms, that is you chance to break the continuity of a first floor’s décor and do something that surprises upon entry. A powder room is a great place in which to try out your riskiest design ideas, to use a bold wallpaper you’ve always wanted to try.

And this is what Lin and I decided to do in the first phase of the renovations, however ultimately he began to panic and had second thoughts about a statement wall covering!! Le sigh!

So let’s take a trip down to memory to last October when we bought this home in Santa Fe. This downstairs powder room was truly the most hideous rooms in the house in my opinion. Soooo very dated and not attractive in any way, shape, or form.

( not even filtering these photos so you can see this space raw)

We knew the ugly mirror and tile was staying so we were then able to start creating around those two components.

So to begin..we immediately purchased a new Starck Dual-Flush toilet, Eridanus 33.5" H White Ceramic Circular Pedestal Bathroom Sink, and all new fixtures plus a new modern sconce. Love this light! It’s minimal yet bold, highlighting Kelly Wearstler ‘s ( one of my fave interior designers) distinctive juxtaposition of mixed-materiality and curvilinear form. Light radiates from milk glass globes set against metal discs. We also added a marble baseboard with extra marble we had from our kitchen renovation and had this room painted in a light grey hue. The floating wall shelf and accessories added a nice touch and this room was definitely what I call an improvement.

But after living with it for almost 4 months _I just really wanted this space to feel more inviting! And as you can see like most powder rooms, it’s not very large and does not have a window. Instead of trying to make it light and bright I explained to Lin that we need to just stop fighting it and stick with the original thought of going dark and moody….also just sort of letting that big ugly mirror we are not changing dissapear in a way. Ultimately I wish we could have just redone this whole little room-mirrors and all but at some point we just had to stop with this remodel so we can get something out of it when we decide to sell in a few years!

So after I talked Lin into my original idea for this space, we found the perfect paper from Murals Your Way and I was so pleased when they wanted to partner with Go French Yourself on this project!

Wallpaper has always held design currency. In my years poring over people’s houses in architectural magazines, I’ve found the homes with the most regal touches to have modern wallpaper finishes. This décor staple has deep roots in my opinion. It also has transformative power. And that is exactly what I needed for this powder room.

This space needed depth, texture, and personality.

I just couldn’t help but lean into this moody maximalist-inspired print!

It’s the Desert Bloom Pattern Wallpaper. From prickly cacti and succulents, gorgeous flowers grow and bloom. The rich color and detailed illustrations bring so much interest to they eye! We went with the Eco Bella Texture which is very durable as it is beautiful! It has a light texture with a matte finish. (PVC Free-Type II-Class A Fire Rating)

We painted the ceiling too a dark raisin color to match the dark tile!

Cheers to giving love to windowless walls! Wallpaper is so great in rooms with large walls that do not have openings or windows. These walls are typically hard to carry with a single piece of artwork and make great candidates for a wall covering from Murals Your Way!
