One Kimono Robe That Adds A Little Luxury To Your Day
We all have our own obsessions: some girls are addicted to beauty products, others are bag collectors, and of course, we all know a jewelry lover or two. But is anyone else out there as obsessed with loungewear as I am? More specifically, robes?
There’s no question I inherited my affinity from my mom; when I think back on my childhood, I recall someone frequently cascading down the stairs in a satin robe, or curled up on the couch in a plush terry cloth one watching Lifetime movies!
My own personal collection is quite impressive. And they each serve a distinct purpose: terry for immediately post-shower, jersey for hot summer days and when applying oils and lotions, and a few silk options for when I’m feeling especially leisurely chic! And these last few months in isolation..well let’s face it…all I have been living in is robes!!!! Some of my robes even mirror fab kimonos and dresses so they create the perfect dress up situation for a waist up Zoom meeting! Hey..there is actually no shame in my game! I admit this! I love adding a little luxury to my days now even when lounging. And my KIM+ONO kimono just makes me feel beautiful!!! Their hand-crafted kimonos are just so special. Scroll down to discover more!
So when Lin and I went to San Francisco in February I had to visit KIM+ONO in the beautiful Chinatown area of the city! It’s one if my favorite areas to stroll around in and photograph and of course eat and drink in but shopping is quite fun also! This beautiful shop just spoke to me!
KIM+ONO is a handcrafted kimono company specializing in silk and charmeuse botanical print kimonos. Each kimono features an original pattern, first sketched by hand, then saturated in rich watercolors using a traditional paintbrush. They design with elegance and function in mind to create classic kimonos that make for a sophisticated staple to any woman’s wardrobe. The lightweight kimonos drape you in breathable comfort, so you feel as good as you look, no matter the occasion.
Their kimonos draw inspiration from the various styles of traditional Chinese brushwork, capturing the aesthetics (artistic principles) of depth, contrast, space, and balance. Many of the robes feature romantic, tranquil scenes of birds and or flowers that bear significance. For example, the lotus flower symbolizes good luck and fortune!
Since the beginning, their kimonos have been stitched together using a common thread: family. For 30 years, the business has remained family owned and operated. Launching first as a small boutique in Chinatown under the name Old Shanghai, to its recent transformation into KIM+ONO, the business has evolved and grown into the apparel brand it is today. Renee and Tiffany, the sister duo now behind the brand, were first allured by kimonos as little girls. Together with their parents, they spent weeks visiting silk villages, meeting with vendors, artisans, and other craftsmen who have been preserving the art of kimonos for generations. As the sisters grew older, they became more involved in the family business, eventually taking it over in 2004. Since then, Renee and Tiffany continue to infuse a modern aesthetic, paired with timeless techniques, to craft beautiful, everyday kimonos.
I have the beautiful AZUMI KIMONO WRAP. This gorgeous draped kimono features decadent velvet details and has a removable waist tie closure. It also features belt loops and inside ties to secure closure. I love that I can wash it myself on a gentle cycle too! I love that it’s dressy enough to layer over dresses and jeans for a night out too!!! (gosh I so look forward to when it’s safe for that again) I love how my beautiful kimono wrap looks like a piece of art too draped over my chair! Or hanging on my heated marble wall in my bathroom just waiting for me to step out of the bath. It is truly an art piece and I will treasure it forever.
There is a shorter version of this beautiful print too (more of a robe) so check it out here. And if you love the Azumi print but are not feeling the velvet, here is a lovely option for you!
A few other robes I have on my wish list are:
